William Griffith McMcikle
Born: Feb. 13, 1805 in North Carolina
Died:  March 10, 1872 in Indiana

Married to:  Catharine Katie Bess Russell  1804-1880
Children:
John R.   1825-1864

Martha Jane   1834-1890

Sarah Catherine Clarinthia   1838-1906

William Griffith McMickle Married Catherine Bess Russell and they went to live in Indiana about 1828 according to Aunt Jennie Davis-Brown, (Martha Jane Davis). Jennie states in her family history: " When William McMickle and Catherine Bess Russell "Katie" were married, they started very soon to make the journey to Indiana. They had a very fine horse and made the trip in a Surrey. He was known as an outstandingly honest man. A judge trying a case where he was called a witness, said, "If he said such and such were the facts that settled the matter, he would accept his word against any evidence." He was also known as the best educated man in that part of the country. Anyone wishing an important letter written, or anything of that kind always came to him. On the tombstone at Elon, Indiana where Grandfather McMickle is buried, " A loving husband, a father dear, a faithful friend lies buried here. He taught school and, I believe, was the first school teacher there".

William G. McMickle is listed in the 1830 Federal Census living in Orange Co., Indiana ref. book M19-31 page 18. At this address is his wife, Catherine B. Russell-McMickle their son John R. McMickle and a sixty year old female that I believe is most likely Catherine mother, Jane B. Shugert-Russell.

The Scottish pronunciation of McMickle often sounds like McMahel or McMekle to the census taker and consequently is just as often spelled as it sounds.
