Susie was married to Theodore Davis who abandoned the family when the children were young They had moved to Oklahoma. Theodore left them and went to Washington State. Some stories say that he worked for the railroad, others say he died in Washington when he fell off of a hay wagon. While there Susie became very ill and sent the children to live with her sister, the Taylor family in Cannelton, Indiana.
After Theodore left her and the boys, Susie worked as a seamstress at a hotel in French Lick, Indiana. She met and married "Doc" Marsee who owned a hardware store in Petersburg, Indiana.
