George met Fern Gray when he hired her to and her sister Geiorgia to work for him. He had a tomato patch where he grew tomatoes to sell to the Cannery in Petersburg. Fern was about 15 years old when she began working for George. George took a liking to her and gave her a raise. When Georgia found out about it, she threatened to blackmail him by tell all of the pickers.
After marrying, George and Fern lived in a small house with no indoor plumbing where the old dairy barn in on Cart Rd. in Petersburg. The property that adjoined them was a farm of a wealthy family and had a large two-story while house with a grainery, a barn, and a garage on the property. The family who had owned it had a son that murdered someone and the family used all their money in his legal defense. The man who hired George to farm his property worked at the bank and knew that the farm and house would be put up for sale for $500. He knew that George was a hard worker so he offered to loan him the money to buy that place which gave George his start as a farmer.
In the early 1950's they struck oil on the farm and celebrated by buying a 1953 Oldsmobile
Later coal was also found on the property.
At the time of his death George owned over 500 acres of farm land, and had become the first farmer in Pike County to own a motorized combine sold in Pike Co.
